Whether exercising, standing, or stuffing them into shoes, we put our feet through a lot every day, and sometimes all that wear, tear, and pressure can result in ailments or infections. One of the most common afflictions to feet are warts. Caused by a viral infection and frequently found on areas of the foot where friction occurs, warts are unsightly, uncomfortable, and can linger if not properly treated. Fortunately, at Advanced Foot Care Center in Ridgefield, CT, our foot doctors can set you up for success in remedying your warts.

What causes warts?

Warts develop through the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can be transmitted through the use of public showers or develop due to skin trauma or a poor immune system.

How do I know if I have warts?

While we often think of warts as protruding, warts on your feet may be flat due to the pressure of standing. These warts may appear rough, scaly, thick, or bumpy and sometimes are comprised of dark spots. Clusters of warts may appear to form a pattern, and typically show up on the heel and ball of your foot.

How do you treat warts?

At our Ridgefield office, your foot doctor will help you determine the best treatment for your warts. Often times, warts can be treated at home by soaking the feet, exfoliating and applying an over-the-counter salicylic acid product. If the warts fail to show improvement within a couple of weeks, your foot doctor may opt to perform treatment in our Ridgefield office. Methods of wart removal may include burning off the wart with the application of a mild acid, using a prescription paste to held dissolve the wart before shaving it down, or administering a topical ointment. Your foot doctor may also advise freezing off the wart with liquid nitrogen or use a laser to destroy it.
